This episode of "Radio Roaming" features two works that expand our typical understanding of the radio antenna: what it looks like, how it works, what it’s made of, and how we interact with it. First is an excerpt from Audrey Briot and Afroditi Psarra’s ongoing project titled Listening Space followed by an excerpt of Community Portal, A New Ritual For The Americas by Natan Diacon-Furtado.
Listening Space is a collaborative artistic research project by Afroditi Psarra and Audrey Briot, initiated in April 2019 during eTextile Spring Break in Wassaic, New York. The project explores transmission ecologies as a means of perceiving the surrounding environment beyond human sensory abilities. It investigates the invisible electromagnetic signals that saturate the atmosphere, considering satellite transmissions both as raw material for artistic expression and as a way of understanding and reimagining the systems through which we observe the Earth.
Community Portal, A New Ritual For The Americas is a collaboration between Azuré Keahi, Fun Stuff Design, and Natan Diacon-Furtado and an experiment in instrumental trans-cultural communication. It utilizes the open-source Community Portal ancestral projection and transmission tool to bring awareness and attention to the dormant cultural memories and othered ancestral imaginations that haunt each of us.
This audio collage features sounds recorded in collaboration with the Mahicannituck (lower Hudson River) Watershed and visitors to the November 2025 exhibit Community Portal, A New Ritual For The Americas at the Experimental Music and Performing Arts Center in Troy, NY. Community Portal is a transmission-based instrument for embodied collaborative listening with local and ancestral waters that was designed in collaboration with Azuré Keahi and Fun Stuff Design.
Radio Roaming bounces across the electromagnetic spectrum, exploring the many possibilities of experimentation with sending and receiving. Produced by Wave Farm staff members, each episode features a selection of contemporary and/or historical radio and transmission art, with the aim of expanding the Wave Farm Radio Art and Transmission Art Archives.
