Jun 23, 2020 3:30 pm
Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics the union that represents public college and university faculty in New York is calling for widespread testing of campus staff and students before the fall semester begins. United University Professions President Fred Kowal said, "There must be testing, it must be mandatory, in order to get the semester off to as healthy and productive a semester as possible." During the fall 2019 semester, 415,572 students were enrolled at SUNY's 64 campuses, making testing everyone a massive undertaking. Approximately 50,000 to 70,000 tests are currently being conducted daily in New York. In addition to one-time testing before the semester begins the union is also arguing to have social distancing guidelines in place, as well spot checks. Capacity needs to be ramped up now in order to handle the influx of needed testing, Kowal said. SUNY campuses were among the first to close in mid-March as the coronavirus pandemic took hold in New York. Read the full story at nystateofpolitics [dot] com.
