Community arts center in Albany's south end defaced with hate graffiti
Sep 27, 2020 6:33 am
Eduardo Medina is reporting for the Times Union the Grand Street Community Arts Center was vandalized with a racial epithet directed at black people, along with the phrase, "Life is Horrible." Albany police spokesperson Steve Smith said they have a suspect in the incident and that she is an African-American woman. Grand Street Executive Director Ta-Sean Murdock said he was appalled when he learned about the incident, with the words painted in blue. "I think it's unfortunate that someone would deface a building — and in an area where the majority of people of color and minorities live," Murdock said. A cleanup effort will take place on Grand Street at 1 p.m September 27. The center is located in the former St. Anthony's Church at 68 Grand Street near Madison Avenue. The organization was formed in 2003 "as a way to bridge the cultural and economic divides in the community." Community radio station WCAA-LP FM is a project of Grand Street Community Arts. Murdock said this is the first time the building has been subjected to explicitly hateful vandalism, but he hopes the cleanup helps people unify. "We need to remember that our words matter," he said.
