This episode of "Radio Roaming" features three works for radio by French composer Hervé Birolini: Rêverie Vénitiennes aux sons enfouis (2004), Un soir à lesdiguières (2004), and Trame (2007). Each of these works, with their layers and visceral textures, locate the listener in a particular place that is real yet somehow imaginary. Also featured in this episode are excerpts from Birolini's album Des éclairs (2023), creating bridges from one work to the next.
In Rêverie Vénitiennes aux sons enfouis, which won first prize in sound art at the Bienal Internacional de Radio, Birolini immerses the listener in Venice. Recordings of water in the canals, voices of Venetians, and the cityscape mix with music, creating a dream-place.
In Un soir à lesdiguières, Birolini placed microphones throughout the Lesdiguières Stadium in Grenoble, one of the oldest multi-purpose oldest stadiums and home of the FC Grenoble rugby union club. Sounds from ticket booths, the locker rooms, and on the pitch come together to place the listener in the game.
In Trame, released on the Optical Sound label, Birolini takes the listener to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer where its calls of auctioneers and gulls, lapping of water, and the clangs of the metal merge. Together, we experience the audioscape and get a sense of the feeling of the port.
