New radio art works from Colin Black and Joan Schuman are featured. About his new radio artwork Morning Is Broken (2021, 20:00 min.), Colin Black writes, "We all like to believe that the morning represents a new fresh positive start to the day, the beginning of what is expected to be cohesive whole experience, but what this work brings focus to is that sometimes mornings can also be broken, as it can be in life, in one way or another as it breaks up all around us. Moreover, this resulting shattered soundscape is further reflected and amplified back to us via various media streams. This work is meant as a stark reminder to not take your morning for granted, treasure it, or your morning could turn into mourning for what was accidentally or recklessly lost."
Produced, Composed, Recorded Compiled and Mixed by Colin Black. Interviewee: Ines Milosevic “Morning Is Broken” is a CONA live in situ commission and part of the Soundcamp 2021 on-line festival led by Acoustic Commons.
Joan Schuman's how you treat them is what you are (2021, 24:41 min.) is a trilogy including The Hitman (7:18 min.), Extinction (5:26 min.), and Slaughter (8:37 min.)
Humans set themselves apart from other animals and in doing so, they behave abhorrently towards them—and benevolently so. There’s a lack of clear villains and heroes. Each scene in the human-animal entanglement is a witness to climate chaos and disease and to the heedless expectations of commerce as we attempt to control the churning mayhem. The audio loops around itself with an imposed linearity, catching the listener at whim, radio-like. It’s framed by the artist’s barely audible presence and the earth’s version and scale of companionship.
Field sound recordings, composition and mixing by Joan Schuman. Collaborations with Gregory Whitehead (vocals, The Hitman); a random Fox News TV report (Extinction); and voice-layers from Blue Blossom Farm, Arcata, CA (Slaughter).
The show features local news, interviews with community leaders and personalities, a rundown of local and regional events, weather updates, and more about and for the community. The show is a place for a community conversation about issues, with music, and more. Saturday the emphasis is more on radio art, and art on the radio. Unlike shows by individual programmers on the station, the "WGXC Afternoon Show" is considered partially station-run. The Wednesday show calls itself the "Drive-Time Show" and Sunday's is "Li Le, Le Tan."
