Some of the stories that made the news Feb. 7 through Feb. 10:
William J. Kemble reported in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board is considering a request to expand a water district to include about a dozen properties on Embought Road. Under the proposal, about 3,700 feet of water lines would be extended from the village system that ends at Catskill Elementary School. Town Supervisor Joseph Leggio said expanding the existing district will require Greene County Health Department approval. Kemble also reported Town Board members have called for a review of the drainage system at Kaaterskill Manor to determine if there are violations of the approved site plan for the senior housing complex. At a meeting early last week, town officials learned stormwater runoff from the senior housing complex at 163 Jefferson Heights is bypassing a drainage system and eroding a neighboring property on Snake Road. The property owner told the paper there has been a problem with drainage since 1994, when the building was the Greene County Hospital. They estimate they have lost approximately 25 feet of lawn area along the width of their property, which has eroded into the Catskill Creek.
Katie Kocijanski is reporting in the Register Star the Faith Christian Academy held its official ribbon-cutting ceremony Sun., Feb. 9, with New York State Sen. Kathleen A. Marchione cutting the ribbon as board members looked on. The school is celebrating the opening of its Little Lions Learning Center, which originally opened back in September. The academy and learning center are ministries of the Calvary Assembly of God. The academy houses Kindergarten through 10th grade and 25 students are currently enrolled. The Little Lions Learning Center is for children aged 3 to 5 years old.
Melanie Lekocevic reported in The Daily Mail former Athens Fire Chief Peter Alberti has been endorsed by the Athens GOP for one of two available seats on the Village Board. Alberti will challenge incumbent Deputy Mayor, Democrat Gail Lasher ,and former Town Council member Phyllis Dinkelacker. Alberti is the only Republican running. Alberti served as fire chief for one two-year term, and is currently a captain in the department. He is a past president of the Greene County Firemen's Association and a deputy coordinator for Greene County Emergency Services. He is an employee of the Town of Athens Highway Department. Village elections are March 18.
Casey Seiler reported in the Times Union Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Fri., Feb. 7, announced the members of the Common Core Implementation Panel, a collaboration with the Legislature that will launch a review of the state's rollout of the educational standards. Criticism of the state Education Department's implementation of the Common Core has steadily increased, with many teachers and parents complaining about excessive testing and insufficient training. The 11-member panel will be chaired by Stanley S. Litow, IBM's vice president for corporate citizenship and corporate affairs and president of its International Foundation. The panel is charged with submitting its reform proposals before the conclusion of the legislative session. On Mon., Feb. 10, the Board of Regents is expected to hear from a panel of Regents members tasked with finding ways to get the implementation plans back on track.
