Oil transportation issues draw a crowd in Kingston

William J. Kemble in The Daily Freeman that about 110 people attended a forum at Kingston City Hall July 8 about local transportation of volatile forms of crude oil and natural gas. Several pipelines are planned in the area, and shipments of crude oil and natural gas on railways and the Hudson River has increased. “Six million gallons a day is going across that (CSX overpass on Broadway) two blocks from here,” Riverkeeper attorney Kate Hudson said, noting that barge, rail, and pipeline systems move 5.8 billion gallons of crude oil from Albany to New Jersey each year. Possible accidents were discussed. “The county has a 10-year-old document that describes emergency evacuation detours, but it really doesn’t go into detail about how to respond to these disasters (involving) spills, explosions or derailments,” said city Alderman Brad Will, D-Ward 3, who also noted oil trains through Kingston have, “gone from almost nothing 10 years ago to beyond 407,000 carloads per year in 2013.” Those oil trains pass through Kingston and Greene County on their way to Albany.
