ICE raids Chatham restaurant

Jan 11, 2019 2:15 pm
Mallory Moench is reporting for the Times Union U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested three men in a restaurant kitchen raid in Chatham last week. The men were detained in the Albany County Jail, according to the Albany County Sheriff, as well as local immigration activists who interviewed one man who was arrested and a restaurant employee. Columbia County Sanctuary Movement Executive Director Bryan MacCormack said it was the first time the organization heard of ICE conducting a restaurant raid in the county since October 2016. Usually, ICE picks people up in their home, on the street, or leaving court, he said. All three men were from Guatemala and did not have immediate relatives in the area, MacCormack said. One of the men had lived in the Capital Region for 12 years. The Columbia County Sanctuary Movement led the effort to raise bond for two men. The third detainee was not eligible for bond because of his immigration status. Read the full story in the Times Union.
