Congress nearing an extension of farm bill

John Mason writes in the Register Star milk prices will probably not double next month, as feared, thanks to an agreement reached between leaders in the U.S. House and Senate Agriculture committees to extend the 2008 farm bill one more year. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., indicated the House could vote on the bill soon, though House leaders have not yet agreed to put the bill on the floor. Expiration of those dairy programs could mean higher prices at the grocery store within a few weeks. Chatham dairy farmer Eric Ooms, vice-president of the New York State Farm Bureau, said the agreement is a good thing if it passes, though it remains to be seen whether it will pass in the U.S. House of Representatives.
