The day ahead on WGXC 90.7-FM
12 a.m. (midnight): Radio News: Internet Slowdown Amy Goodman, from "Democracy Now!," explains about the “Internet Slowdown,” a global day of grassroots action Sept. 10. Protesters won’t actually slow the Internet down, but will place on their websites animated “Loading” graphics (which organizers call “the proverbial ‘spinning wheel of death’”) to symbolize what the Internet might soon look like. As that wheel spins, the rules about how the internet works are being redrawn. Large Internet service providers, or ISPs, like Comcast, Time Warner, AT&T and Verizon are trying to change the rules that govern your online life.
12:05 a.m.: Radio Stew: Slow Ride "Jolene," from Dolly Parton, kicks off a playlist of slowed-down songs, such as The White Stripes' "Hello Operator."
1 a.m.: Vital Weekly: Bryan Eubanks Episode 946 of weekly experimental new music show, by folks formerly behind Staalplaat. Click on title for playlist 946.
2 a.m.: FFFoxy Podcast: Anne Guthrie For FFF #42, Chris Berry of Minneapolis-based Soft Abuse Records joined us in the studio to spin some records from his vast collection and to talk a little shop about his label activities. This time around it included discussion of Fruits & Flowers, a new label he recently started up with Glenn Donaldson of Skygreen Leopards/Jewelled Antler et al. fame. We also carved out some time to discuss the Old Familiar Chime festival that Chris has had a hand in organizing at the Turf Club in St. Paul for Friday, September 19. This event is focused on singular guitarists that span several generations, featuring an impressive line-up that includes the likes of Glenn Jones, Bill Orcutt, Michael Chapman, Steve Gunn, Alexander Turnquist, Matthew De Gennaro, and Spider John Koerner. Please check out the following links for more information: Soft Abuse, Fruits & Flowers, Old Familiar Chime. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments.
4 a.m.: Bob's Slacktime Funhouse: Norble Durnquest Tonight, seekers, comes the first fruits from the Funhouse Radio Outreach Project (my F.R.O.P. agenda), and I am damned proud! Reverend Louie Louie's show project has jelled into fearsome excellence. But this more than just a wonderfully goofy and evocative radio exercise produced by the hands of an editing master--this is the long-awaited culmination of an interrupted dream from thirty frickin' years ago! As I describe it in the intro, RL² has an impressive radio pedigree, and in the day, he produced some amazing stuff, particularly the Norble Durnquest. He wasn't just a star...he was a hero. And tonight, after decades spent in limbo, Norble's sprawling narrative at last has been given the courtesy of a radio reacharound. The loose ends that seemed destined to dangle in the breeze forever have been macraméed into a wondrous sonic excursion into the mind of this marvelous madman.
6 a.m.: Background Briefing with Ian Masters Inside breaking international and national news. A radio program featuring international and national news, expert guests, policy makers and critics with analysis and insight on national security, foreign and domestic policy, political, cultural and social issues. This program goes far beyond the headlines and deep under the radar to bring forward truths unheard in the American media.
7 a.m.: WGXC Morning Show News, events, music and more.
8 a.m.: Democracy Now! hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez.
9 a.m.: WGXC Morning Show continues.
10 a.m.: The Right Opinion: Holly Tanner A remembrance and discussion of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. Plus, a conversation about the Sept. 9 Democratic gubernatorial primary election and the upcoming general election with Holly Tanner, Republican candidate for Columbia County Clerk. Hosted by Ed Fertik.
