Some of the stories that made the news from Fri., June 6, through Mon., June 9:
The Times Union reported the Harlem Valley Rail Trail was one of five new national recreation trails designated in New York Sat., June 7. Federal officials made the announcement in celebration of National Trails Day. The Harlem Valley Rail Trail includes a four-mile paved bicycle and pedestrian path extending under Mountain Road to Taconic State Park in Copake Falls. The 11-mile Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Dutchess County was also designated by the Secretary of the Interior and the National Park Service.
Melanie Lekocevic reported in The Daily Mail the Athens Citizens Development Committee presented its case against a proposed $1 billion West Point Partners power project to the Athens Village Board last week. Attorney Jerry Bunting said much of the group’s opposition to the project is based on the construction of the converter station and the route the underground cables would take. Athens Mayor Chris Pfister said he was opposed to the route as it currently stands, but other possible routes could be explored. Pfister said the village could profit from the project. ACDC would like the village board to adopt a formal resolution in opposition to the project.
Rick Karlin reported at Capitol Confidential the state's largest teachers union, New York State United Teachers, is adding to its ongoing lawsuit against the state’s property tax freeze. The union contends the school tax freeze instituted by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo chips away at local control and is unfair to districts whose residents vote to exceed the cap. The union's motion to amend its 2013 lawsuit is now before the state Supreme Court. If the court goes along with NYSUT's argument, the case against the tax cap and the tax freeze credit program will be combined and heard at a later date.
Kyle Adams reported in The Daily Mail Mountain Jam celebrated its 10th anniversary this weekend. The anniversary was marked with a giant red “Mountain Jam X” sign high on Hunter Mountain. Often ranked among the country’s best, the festival lineup included The Allman Brothers, on their farewell tour, Bob Weir & Ratdog, Pretty Lights and the Avett Brothers. The event started Thursday night and ran through Sunday.
