Greenport hit with DEC consent order, fine

Mar 08, 2016 12:02 am

Roger Hannigan Gilson writes in the Register-Star the town of Greenport has been fined and ordered by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to ensure the installation of backflow protectors in town homes that were flooded with sewage multiple times in the past two years. The devices stop sewage from flowing into homes. The town will require the homeowners affected by the flooding to have the backflow protectors installed. According to Town Engineer Ray Jurkowski, "a handful to a dozen" homes would require the protectors. The need for the devices came about after sewage backed up into homes and manholes during the heavy rainstorms that hit the area during the last two years. In the 2015 rainstorm the sewer line became blocked with paper waste. In 2014, a sewage pipeline exploded and caused backups at houses on Virginia and Anthony avenues, Greenport Parkway and other areas. The DEC consent order includes a $2,000 fine and forces the town to speed up home inspections to determine if households are illegally draining water into the municipal sewer system. The consent order requires the town to complete an interim report by March 14, then complete the inspections by the end of 2016. Read the full story in the Register-Star.
