State releases its finalized fracking review

May 14, 2015 6:40 am
Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential the state has released its finalized review of the use of hydraulic fracturing in New York. The Department of Environmental Conservation Wed., May 13, released its final supplemental generic environmental impact statement, approximately five months after it was announced that fracking would not be permitted to take place in New York. That decision touched off joyous celebration among environmental advocates and sharp criticism from both the business community and those who saw the practice as having potential to revitalize the Southern Tier. Anti-fracking groups praised the release of the report, Wednesday. Kate Sinding, director of the Community Fracking Defense Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council said the report solidly backs up the fracking ban. Frack Action Campaign Director Julia Walsh said the group New Yorkers Against Fracking could not be more proud to celebrate the next step in finalizing the ban. However, State Business Council President and CEO Heather Briccetti was among those to quickly object to the report. She said it was “profoundly disappointing that fear and misinformation have won the day.” Read the full story at Capitol Confidential, a Times Union blog.
