Groups united against Troy apartment complex

Dec 28, 2020 5:30 am

Rick Karlin is reporting for the Times Union opponents of a 240-unit apartment complex proposed for the northern part of Troy have created a group, Friends of the Mohicantuck. Mohicantuck is an ancient Mohican Indian name for the Hudson River, but the group fighting the project is not affiliated with the tribe. Tribal leaders in Wisconsin did not initially know that Friends of the Mohicantuck had been formed over the issue. “We have no relationship with the Friends of the Mohicantuck,” Heather Bruegl, the tribe’s cultural affairs director said in a recent interview. Despite that, Bruegl stressed the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians have also weighed in against the complex. The apartments would be located on a riverside spot that is of significance to them. The project would go in what opponents say is the city’s last undisturbed parcel of forest along the Hudson River, as well as what could be the site of the ancient flint mining area and other artifacts that help illustrate what life was like for the Mohicans hundreds and even thousands of years ago. The Mohican Munsee Band sent a letter to the city council urging them to rethink the project. The proposed apartment complex is still in the early stages, said Planning and Economic Developer Steven Strichman. He said the city Planning Commission will consider whether to recommend the council make a zoning change to allow for the project, as proposed by local businessman Kevin Vandenburgh. If the Council votes to move ahead, the project would require an environmental review. Read the full story in the Times Union.
