Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential a new poll indicates New York voters believe Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will ultimately help Democrats in the battle for control of the state Senate. A Siena [SEE-en-ah] Research Institute poll released Wed., Aug. 17, shows 62 percent of voters surveyed believe Trump will not help the GOP in Senate races this year. At the same time, 64 percent of voters say Democrat Hillary Clinton will help the Democrats retake the Senate for the first time since 2010. Clinton has opened a 30-point lead statewide, and is ahead of Trump in every region. The poll also showed incumbent U.S. Senator Charles Schumer leads Republican challenger Wendy Long by 39 points. Siena polled 717 registered voters statewide early this week. Read the full story at Capitol Confidential, a Times Union blog.
