New law increases hunting fines
Nov 30, 2017 1:24 pm
Matthew Hamilton in Capitol Confidential reports that Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law Nov. 29 increasing the fines for killing deer, bear, moose, or elk out of season. The new minimum is a $500 fine, and the maximum is $3,000. “Deer jacking,” which is shining a spotlight on a deer causing the animal to freeze, also faces stiffer penalties under the law. Fines per deer killed also increase, to not less than $500 and not more than $1,000 for each deer. Repeat offenders are subject to fines of not less than $750 and not more than $2,000. Assemblyperson Carrie Woerner’s bill sponsor’s memo says, “Too often individuals apprehended for deer poaching receive only a slap on the wrist.” Read the full story in Capitol Confidential.
