Brendan J. Lyons reports in the Times Union an audit of the region's high school athletic association concludes the organization may have been defrauded by its former treasurer, or simply victimized by years of poor bookkeeping. The forensic audit began last year after the non-profit group's former treasurer, Roger Seward, committed suicide. In the aftermath of Seward's death, it was discovered Section 2 of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, had roughly $350,000 spread across seven accounts in four banks, much more money than the association should have had. Section 2 coordinates sectional and state championship sporting events for high school athletes in 98 school districts, including districts in Columbia and Greene counties. The audit blames the organization's financial problems, including never filing tax returns, largely on Seward. However, Seward had been the treasurer only 10 years, and tax returns had not been filed since Section 2 was incorporated in 1978. In addition, the audit notes many of the concerns were discussed for years at various meetings held by the organization's leaders, who include athletic directors and school superintendents.
