What began as a documentary about gay teen homelessness and suicide in Utah soon morphed into an exposé of the codified homophobia that prompts otherwise loving Mormon parents to kick teenagers out of their homes. When director Reed Cowan turns his attention to the historic campaign by the Mormon Church to pass Proposition 8 in California, 8: The Mormon Proposition becomes an emotional and fiercely personal outcry, and a powerful condemnation of religiously sanctioned discrimination. "Beyond the inflammatory material, 8: The Mormon Proposition truly resonates when it tells the stories of everyday gays and lesbians who have dealt with the shame and pain they say they have suffered because of LDS doctrine. It’s in these moments that the film’s passion speaks for itself. In these voices, “8: The Mormon Proposition” becomes a vital, important cry for an open dialogue. It’s unfortunate that one side still refuses to come to the table."--The Salt Lake Tribune
