The Cairo Historical Society brings Jay Ciccone, an archaeologist from Catskill, New York, and the curator of the Klyne-Esopus Museum, to speak. His research is in all time periods of Hudson Valley archaeology, however his main focus is in the Native American period. Ciccone specializes in the study of the first native cultures to inhabit the Hudson River Valley region at the end of the last Ice Age approximately 13,000 years ago. He has presented his research at international conferences as far away as Honolulu, Hawaii. He will be presenting a talk on the Native American people who inhabited Greene County and the environs. Wave Farm’s WGXC is pleased to present a series of free public workshops taking place at local area libraries this fall. As a part of the Arts + Culture + Transmission initiative, WGXC Mobile Studio Manager and artists Max Goldfarb will lead participants in creating “Radio from the Field.” Participants will make field recordings and edit audio, and learn to construct projects for radio and digital distribution, as a basis for giving voice to our local environments. The two sessions will culminate in a short, radio-ready production that will become a part of Wave Farm's WGXC archive. These workshops will be presented at the Hudson Area Library for adults.

The sessions will be held Nov. 10 and Nov. 17. Individuals interested in environmental sound recording, soundscape research and radio production are encouraged to attend. The Athens Citizens Development Committee presents a mini film festival celebrating Athens' forgotten son, Crane Wilbur. Born in Athens in 1886, Wilbur became one of the world's most popular film stars in the early 20th century and went on to write, direct, and star in numerous film and stage works. From the 1930s to the 1960s he wrote and directed prison films, police procedurals, and B-horror flicks. This event takes place at Crossroads Brewing Co, which was formerly the Brooks Opera House where Wilbur performed locally. Featuring "Yellow Cargo"(1936), "I was a Communist for the FBI"(1951), and "Tomorrow's Children"(1934).

SADD students at Taconic Hills Jr./Sr. High School, Coxsackie-Athens High School, and Hunter-Tannersville High School will be participating in a Capital Region wide Great American Smokeout event from November 12-19. Students from 20 schools and community organizations in the Capital Region will be putting up yard signs at school entrances that display messages about youth smoking and ways to stop tobacco marketing aimed at youth. Students will put up a new yard sign every day for a week. This event will help raise awareness around the ongoing issue of youth smoking and tobacco marketing that targets them.

Canadian electronic musician Tim Hecker returns to forge a new performance of sound and light. Hecker was last in residence at EMPAC in 2012, during which time he recorded a portion of his critically acclaimed album Virgins. Credited for helping lead and popularize the genre of experimental electronics, his works have been described as "structured ambient," "tectonic color plates," and "cathedral electronic music." More to the point, he has focused on exploring the intersection of noise, dissonance, and melody, fostering an approach to musicmaking that is both physical and emotive.

A student of famed improviser Anthony Braxton, she studied jazz at Wesleyan University and the New School before becoming a member of several of Braxton’s bands and a contributor to six of his recordings. Her education deepened with stints in no-wave guitarist Marc Ribot’s quartet Sun Ship and Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant. Her longstanding trio has been named a “rising star” by Downbeat Magazine and critics have called her “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” and “the future of jazz guitar.” Marston is one of the most powerful figures on the New York death-metal scene, playing with groups such as Behold…The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Krallice, and Gorguts. His complex and technically demanding music weaves jagged rhythms with unrelenting energy to confront listeners with a wall of pure sonic force. Marston also runs a recording studio called Menegroth, The Thousand Caves in Queens where he records, mixes, and masters many forms of music. His prolific output includes extreme metal, progressive/experimental rock, avant garde improvisation, free jazz, new music/modern classical, and ambient genres.

Chatham’s sixteenth annual WinterFest celebration will kick off Dec. 4 with the arrival of Santa on a firetruck, and will continue throughout the weekend. Wave Farm’s WGXC is pleased to present a series of free public workshops at local libraries as part of the Arts + Culture + Transmission program. Radio from The Field will introduce participants to environmental sound recording and to audio editing, to construct projects for radio and digital distribution. WGXC Mobile Studio Manager and artist Max Goldfarb will work with participants on how to create field recordings, edit audio, and construct projects, using free sound editing software, as a basis for giving voice to our local environments. During the two workshop sessions participants will produce a short, radio-ready production that will become a part of Wave Farm's WGXC archive. No previous experience necessary. The December sessions at the Tivoli Free Library are intended for adult participants.

Rensselaer Orchestra and Concert Choir under the direction of Arts Lecturer Nicholas Demaison perform with members of the Albany Symphony for a collaborative, side-by-side performance. The Rensselaer Concert Choir will perform selections of choral folk music, then be joined by the Rensselaer Orchestral Brass for old-world antiphonal favorites by Palestrina and Gabrieli. Following intermission, the Orchestra, with members of the Albany Symphony, will perform Antonin Dvorák's Symphony No.9, "From the New World," composed in 1893 while Dvorák was the director of the National Conservatory in New York City.

On Tuesday, December 15 residents of the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District will be voting on a $17.9 million capital project that includes enhancements to the safety and security systems at all four of the district’s school buildings as well as renovations to the high school and athletic fields. The project would install surveillance cameras inside and outside all school buildings as well as replace all interior door hardware with intruder lock sets. The entrances to each school would have security enhancements as well. Fire alarm, building access, PA and phone systems are planned to be replaced.

The Planning Board of the Town of Greenport will hold a public hearing pursuant to Town Law on the Subdivision of land located at 319 Joslen Blvd. in the Town of Greenport, owned by the Columbia Land Conservancy. The proposal will create two parcels; 1 parcel containing 1 acre and the remaining lands containing 738.69 acres. All interested persons will be given an opportunity to be heard.
