Jack Newsham is reporting for the New York Law Journal hundreds of lawsuits were filed statewide under the Child Victims Act against the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts and other institutions, August 14, the first day of a one-year window to file historic claims of child sex abuse. Attorneys are saying that many more cases are in the pipeline. At the end of the day, 169 cases had been filed in the five counties of New York City, and another 258 cases were filed outside of the city, including 32 in Albany. The Minnesota firm of Jeff Anderson and Associates filed 262 lawsuits against Catholic entities at locations across New York naming 60 never-before-named perpetrators of abuse. Attorneys are warning that the cases are difficult because the evidence spans many years and they will take some time to litigate. For their part, state court officials have been preparing for the rush of Child Victims Act cases, training judges about the new law and assigning five judges to oversee pretrial proceedings in the cases.
