Oct 01, 2004 - Oct 03, 2004
City Hall Park
Microradio Sound Walk premiered as part of Spectropolis with Damian Catera, Matt Mikas, Michelle Nagai, and Tom Roe. Spectropolis examined the expanding use of wireless technologies in urban environments and underscores their implications for art, aesthetic play, community, and shared space. It was part of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's larger program "The New Lower Manhattan and Its Digital Futures," a year-long effort that brought together arts and music events, conferences, a think tank and web portal, to explore, demonstrate, and celebrate the role of information technology and interactive media in re-imagining the future of Lower Manhattan.
Spectropolis was organized by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and NYCwireless and included works making creative use of the electromagnetic spectrum (including long-range licensed and short-range unlicensed or Wi-Fi technology). Participants included Julian Bleecker; Sawad Brooks and Phillip Tiongson; Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Katherine Moriwaki; Carlos Gomez de Llarena; free103point9 Transmission Artists Damian Catera, Matt Mikas, Michelle Nagai, and Tom Roe; Josh Kinberg; Jeff Knowlton and Naomi Spellman; Karen Lee; Akitsugu Maebayashi; Eric Paulos; Ben Recht and DSP Music Syndicate; Trebor Scholz; and Jeremy Wood.
