Wirefull Flags: Flags have been used for thousands of years to communicate without words. They can be used to show unity or can express independence and individuality. More recently, electrical wiring has become important for non-verbal communication. Now wires form a network that spans the globe and unifies while allowing individual expression and exploration. This summer, LoVid is presenting a series of Wirefull Interventions, where people have an opportunity to interact with the physical substance of electronic communication, wires. For Wirefull Flags (June 14, 2008 in Hudson, NY), audience will have an opportunity to create their own flags, which they will hang from wires that connect to one of LoVid's sound and video producing instruments. The audience will hold these wires to fly their flags and will simultaneously contribute their individual bodies' electrical signals into a collaborative creation of sound and video.

Radio Action III is a special program for Radio Web MACBA and the next free103point9 Audio Dispatch CD Release. RWM is a radio-phonic project on the MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona) website that explores the possibilities of the internet and radio as spaces of synthesis and exhibition. Radio Action III features five-minute sounds works conceptually tied to 'Radio' as instrument or theme, composed by free103point9 Transmission Artists working in collaborative teams. Join free103point9, in collaboration with Electronic Arts Intermix and Socrates Sculpture Park, for a summertime "drive-in," leaving the car at home and incorporating audience participation. "Cinema On Air" features an evening of projected silent video works, selected from the EAI Collection, accompanied by two simultaneous sound performances heard through radio headphones. Take a seat in the park, tune-in to either of the two live soundtracks, watch the works in silence, or sample all three experiences.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own radios and headphones. A limited number of radios with headphones will be available on site. (This event will conclude Socrates' Summer Solstice program, which begins at 5 p.m. Cinema On Air will begin at sunset.)

"On discussing the relationship between sound, image, audience, and the poetic moment in cinema, Maya Deren describes a scenario in which a person looks out of a window onto the street while listening to the activity taking place in the room behind them. Here the observer gathers images happening in one direction andsounds happening in another. “...What relates these two moments is your position in relation to the two of them... you stand by the window and have a sense of afternoon, which is neither the children in the street, nor the women talking behind you, but a curious combination of both..."

Motion pictures are fundamentally a collage comprised of still images. These frames are often times accompanied by a sequence of sounds. The audience collects the images through eye sight and the sounds through hearing. In this sense, the audience is the locus of cinema. Tonight's program develops within the audience, in the area where disparate components come together. The park is now an urban drive-in, abandoning the car and embracing the radio, where the edges of the screen are contrasted by the expanse of the night's sky, suggesting the difference between framing and limitlessness. Images recorded years ago are projected onto a screen, with bodies and places recreated in a new location, flattened from three to two dimensions. Opposite the screen, the lights along the New York City skyline are glowing, the variations in luminance demonstrating the distance from building to building. Soundtracks are created live as the performers play to the silent films and videos. Each sound is happening for the first time, and is displaced from one location to another through the process of transmission. Tonight the park serves as the quintessential movie theater; the meeting place for disparate components, where the audience can 'stand by the window and have a sense of afternoon'. Laurie Olinder (Projection/Set Designer):
Laurie Olinder is a painter and an award winning theatrical designer. She has been commissioned to create multimedia visuals for Philip Glass, John Adams, Gavin Bryars, Michael Gordon, Henryk Gorecki, David Lang, Harry Partch,and Julia Wolfe. She is a founding member of Ridge Theater and has been recognized with two Obie awards, a Bessie award, and an Elliot Norton Award.

Bill Morrison (Filmmaker):
Bill Morrison's films have been screened at festivals, museums and concert halls worldwide, including the Sundance Film Festival, the Tate Modern, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Museum of Modern Art has acquired eight of his titles. Morrison has been commissioned to create films for some of the most important composers of our time, including John Adams, Gavin Bryars, Bill Frisell, Michael Gordon, Henryk Gorecki, David Lang, Harry Partch, Steve Reich and Julia Wolfe. Morrison is a Guggenheim fellow and has received the Alpert Award. His work with Ridge Theater has been recognized with two Bessie awards and an Obie Award. "Decasia", his feature length collaboration with composer Michael Gordon, is described by J. Hoberman of the Village Voice as "the most widely acclaimed American avant-garde film of the fin-de-siècle."

Live show from Salem Art Works in upstate New York. All-day festival at rural sculpture park opens at 2 p.m. with a free103point9 Radio 4x4 (four artists performing into FM transmitters to boom boxes spread among audience). Radio 4x4 performers include a Joanne Hsieh + Marc Barreda + Andrew Sullivan + Missi St. Pierre. The day of performances will be streamed live on free103point9 Online Radio. Other performers include Bob Holman + Vito Ricci, New Randy, Gun Christmas, Next President, Syd Barrett Appreciation Society, Neptune, Megafaun, Jonathan Kane's February and special guests. free103point9 co-presents SAWfest 2008. Salem Art Works will be presenting its annual, all-day, outdoor music/sound/poetry/transmission event SAWfest on July 19th from 2-11pm at its 119-acre site in Washington County. This year will see a broader scope of music, expanded to include all methods of sound-making and broadcasting. The public is invited to attend with tickets going on sale for $10 on June 1st at the SAW's newly inaugurated Visitor's Center at 19 Cary Lane or by calling 518 854 7674. Opening the day will be a special radio broadcast by fellow nonprofit organization free103point9 out of Brooklyn, NY. Starting with a 4x4 radio broadcast where four performers from the festival's roster are chosen to perform a score for four radios, free103point9 will then continue a live internet stream of the event's happenings. Several radios will be spread throughout the SAW site to enable audience members to wander freely throughout the property and listen remotely. Radio 4x4
Radio 4x4 is a collaborative radio transmission performance. Four simultaneous audio performances are separately sent through FM transmitters tuned to different frequencies and are picked up by radios positioned throughout a performance space and tuned to those four frequencies. The audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, "mixing" the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals. Radio 4x4 was conceived of by free103point9 staff members in 2003. Jonathan Kane
Jonathan Kane's February (New York, NY) will headline this year's event. As a Woodstock, New York teenager obsessed with the mystique of Chicago's Southside, Kane, along with his brother Anthony, formed the Kane Bros. Blues Band. This was no standard teen garage band -- Kane was good. Very good. While other high school kids sloughed at the burger shop or studied their algebra, Jonathan Kane was lying about his age, playing bars opening for Muddy Waters and James Cotton. Kane's rise to prominence as a Downtown NYC legend began as co-founder of Swans, the seminal no-wave, New York band he started with Michael Gira in 1977. Kane takes credit for the deliberate rhythms and complexity of Swans' early work, attributing it to his lifelong love of the blues. Leading February, his six-piece, four-guitar band, Kane summons Swans' concussive wallop, then steers it all head-on into the blues. As _Rolling Stone_ sums it up: Kane is, quite simply, "volcanic." Neptune
Neptune's three members are equal parts musicians, sculptors, scientists, blacksmiths, electricians, and industrial machinists; relentlessly inventive, possibly sane. Together, they construct all of their instruments, forging guitars and drums out of circular saw blades, gas tanks, oil drums, bike parts, VCR casings, and miscellany from the trash. Electronics, and even cords, are homemade as well. The combined effect is a bizarre, post-apocalyptic mélange of steel, iron, wire, rust, rivet, knob, and cable; it's lunacy, arc-welded for maximum destruction. Concerts are seizures of motion. Wearing 40-pound guitars assembled entirely from scrap metal, the members don't play their instruments - they battle them, like mechanized golems. They will be in residence at SAW the week following SAWfest teaching a nontraditional instrument building and electronics workshop Sound, Object + Action, and also play late in the day on July 19th. Megafaun
From the vibrant Southern quasi-capital of Durham emerge Megafaun, wearing earnestness across the chest and abstraction along the sleeves. They pour forth dulcet harmonies, as seeking vocals tug banjo lines up the Appalachian mountains; redemptive noise soaks everything, like thick air wafting from the Atlantic. Bury the Square, Megafaun's debut, is a triumph, bearing an essential consequence: folk music has been wrested from purist hands. Clawhammer banjo and strummed acoustics lock and roll with electric guitars and electronic textures. They don't add freak to folk or folk to freak; rather, they realize that folk implies deep, personal, intense expression, whether the instrument is a parlor piano with the lid thrown back or a distortion pedal with the case cracked loose. Peter Barrett
