Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Hudson Conservation Advisory Council has received a $20,000 Urban Forestry Grant from the state Department of Environmental Conservation for a tree inventory and management plan. The DEC awarded a total of $1.4 million to 38 municipalities in 20 counties statewide, ranging from $12,800 to $75,000 each. The Hudson tree inventory will document most park trees and all street trees by professional foresters, HCAC member Hilary Hillman said. The trees’ health, environment and species will be recorded in a database. In Oakdale Park and Charles William Park, the documentation will include only the trees within 15 feet of a trail or recreation area. Trees in Promenade Hill Park will not be included in the record because the Downtown Revitalization Initiative project already includes a tree inventory of that part of the city. The plan will be created for the management and maintenance of city trees over the next five years, Hillman said. Once the existing trees are accounted for, a plan to plant more trees can be made. Hillman is advocating for the city to have a tree ordinance and tree committee in order to qualify for more funding for tree maintenance and planting. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
