Upstate Films closes Woodstock location

Apr 24, 2021 12:03 am

Paul Kirby reports in the Daily Freeman that after a decade of showing movies in Woodstock, Upstate Films is leaving its Tinker Street Cinema. “The Tinker Street Cinema was financially marginal during the past few years,” Upstate's Jason Silverman said in an email April 23. “Attendance had dropped significantly — more than 35 percent since its height under our management. We anticipate the post-COVID attendance to decrease still more.” Upstate Film's main location is Rhinebeck, with two screens shut down since the pandemic began, and they took over what would have been a closed theater in Woodstock in 2010. The organization, which shows mostly independent films, wrote in its newsletter that while the location closes, “In the meantime we pledge to continue to bring cinema to Woodstock, through outdoor events and pop-ups, and in collaboration with the Woodstock Film Festival." The Tinker Street Cinema in Woodstock was converted from a church in the 1960s, and Jimi Hendrix played on the stage in front of the screen in 1969 before the Woodstock rock festival.
