Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the six-year-old labor dispute between Greene County and the union representing county highway department workers may end soon. Legislators and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union have both now accepted a fact-finder’s review of the latest contract, but the union wants a few changes. “If the terms are agreeable, we will have a special Public Works meeting on Monday,” Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden said last week. Right now the county has eight vacancies in its highway department. “This should help us in the recruitment area,” Groden said. “We will finally be able to give raises, which will help us be competitive.” Union officials say it is about time. “We haven’t had a raise in over a decade,” the former president of the Greene County union, Donald Maben, said.
