Artist installs floating sculptures in Oakdale Lake

Oct 05, 2020 5:45 am
Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media artist Daniel Rothbart has installed his project Flotilla, a group of floating sculptures to Oakdale Lake in Hudson. Rothbart said Flotilla "...is kind of fantastical, ...these floating sculptures. It’s very unexpected and it gets you more in tune in a funny way, the kind of unseen qualities of the lake, the movement of the water.” The installation is comprised of structures made from Venetian glass and aluminum. The glass pieces were displayed in another version of Flotilla presented at the Hotel Excelsior in Venice, Italy, in 2007. “These things are hardy enough to live in a Venetian canal,” Rothbart said. The pieces are anchored in the lake, but they are free to float. Flotilla will be accompanied by musical performances and poetry readings. Rothbart will videotape the performers in front of the installation on October 10, 11 and 17, and they will be viewable at the artist's website to comply with COVID-19 safety precautions. Rothbart, 54, was born in Stanford, California, and is married to Francine Hunter McGivern, a multidisciplinary artist who works with photography and performance.
