Kemble reports in The Daily Freeman that Kingston Common Council members want the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to limit plans for storm-surge barriers near New York City at the southern end of the Hudson River. With Nor'easter storms and hurricanes growing stronger with climate change, the Army Corps wants to limit flooding damage in New York City. But environmentalists warn that storm barriers near New York City will affect the tidal flow upriver. The Kingston Common Council voted 7-0 Sept. 12 for a resolution to voice concern for the “health of the river and its wildlife.... Open tidal exchange is essential to move sediment and flush contaminants and if ... restricted the harbor could require much more dredging to maintain shipping channels,” city officials wrote. “Sewage and other contaminant could flush to the ocean more slowly, resulting in more pollution for our already contaminated harbor and river.” Read the full story in The Daily Freeman.
