Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup three Republicans and three Democrats have declared interest in running for the two open seats representing Cairo on the Greene County Legislature. All 14 seats on the legislature are open this year. In Cairo, longtime representative Republican Bill Lawrence is not seeking reelection; his colleague, Democrat Harry Lennon is running for his sixth, three-year term. Three Republicans are currently circulating petitions to get their names on the ballot for the June 22 primary election. They include town Supervisor John Coyne, Sherry B. True and Michael Camadine. “As some of you may know I did run for Cairo Town Supervisor two years ago,” said True. “I learned many things during that run and lost by only 69 votes.” True is co-president of the Cairo Development Foundation. Her goals, if elected, would focus on infrastructure improvements to attract business, and improved broadband access. Coyne said he believes that if elected, his experience as town supervisor will be beneficial. As supervisor he has worked closely with both legislators and county officials on various projects and infrastructure improvements. he said. He also stays current on the meetings of the legislature and is up to date on issues and undertakings, he said. Camadine is former one-term county legislator having served until 2006, when he lost his reelection bid to Lennon. “Our county government has been dominated by the Town of Coxsackie and its interests for decades,” Camadine said in a statement. “Representatives from Coxsackie have long held the top county offices, controlling the county legislature, county treasurer’s office, the Industrial Development Agency and the Greene County Republican Party. It’s no wonder the town of Coxsackie has been the focus of development in our county. Let’s work together to change that.” Cairo Democratic Chair Valerie McAviney said that in addition to Lennon, William Scheriff, and Joe Colangelo are running.
