GE announces Schenectady layoffs

Jan 17, 2017 12:02 am

The Times Union is reporting General Electric Co. disclosed Mon., Jan. 16, its plans to lay off 35 workers at the GE Schenectady campus. The layoffs are expected to occur on April 12. The jobs being cut are part of the energy storage unit of the GE division Current, powered by GE. The energy storage unit once oversaw GE's Durathon battery plant and employed 450 people. The plant manufactured industrial-sized batteries used in the telecommunications industry. GE closed that facility in 2015. Company spokesman Nikolas Noel said the job cuts are part of a realignment of the company's energy storage business. "Current, powered by GE, is making strategic organizational changes to drive more focus throughout our business," Noel said. GE has about 4,000 workers at its Schenectady campus, the GE Power headquarters. The campus is also home to GE's steam turbine and generator plant that supplies power plant operators.
