Massarah Mikati reports in the Times Union that Bethlehem Town Supervisor David VanLuven used an expletive to describe a local activist at a meeting Aug. 26. “What this was is a continuation of a pattern of blatant disrespect with our group and me personally,” said Xavier Cruz, 20, a University at Albany student, who VanLuven called a “d—k.” He publicly apologized later in the meeting. “I was terribly inappropriate,” VanLuven told the Times Union on Thursday. “I’m deeply disappointed in myself for letting my thoughts out like that, regardless of whether my microphone was on or not.” The meeting was held on Zoom, which has been a host of many local inappropriate comments recently. Also on Aug. 26, an online meeting of the Geyser Road Elementary School in Saratoga Springs was disrupted with pornographic and Nazi images. Maura Manny, spokeswoman for the district, told the Times Union it was "an unfortunate incident ... where an outsider gained access into the Zoom meeting and shared inappropriate content." Recently a Catskill Board of Education meeting was disrupted by a single person using racial epitaphs, and a Village of Catskill meeting someone cursed while a member of the public spoke and only board members were not muted.
