Anderson breaks down FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's bragging at the 2018 National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas last month about the agency’s efforts to combat unlicensed broadcasting. What he finds are errors, lies, and/or obfuscation. Pai claimed in his speech that the FCC has issued 210 Notices of Unlicensed Operation in 2017, but Anderson can only confirm records of 171. Anderson looks into the details behind three recent high-profile FCC pirate radio busts in Boston, Queens, and Miami, and finds inconsistencies or ghosts. "Only one FCC employee will confirm that a pirate station-raid happened in the Miami area, but not who it targeted or when it went down. All other FCC folks I’ve asked refer me to a U.S. Attorney’s office who can’t find any information to backstop [FCC’s regional enforcement Director Ronald] Ramage’s claim, and both federal and local law enforcement say there’s been no activity," Anderson writes.
