Cuomo worries about Russian interference in New York elections

Mar 09, 2018 2:45 pm
Kenneth Lovett reports for The New York Daily News that Gov. Andrew Cuomo said March 8 that he is worried Russia, or another country, could attempt to mess with New York's elections this year. Cuomo said that in 2016 Presidential elections federal officials believe Russians targeting election systems in 21 states. "No one said in those 21 states that they were only looking at federal races," Cuomo said. "They could have dual purposes here. Yes, influence the federal elections, but also secondarily, just create chaos in the American electoral system." Cuomo said the state will spend several million dollars more on New York's boards of election this year. "This is a frightening situation when you think about it," Cuomo said. "The local boards of elections are not the most electronically sophisticated operations. If they could hack into a board of elections in Erie County, where Buffalo is located, New York City and all of a sudden they get the registered voters list and record votes for them, it could be pandemonium." A recent report in The New York Times Magazine said that one of the country's largest voting machine manufacturers, Election Systems & Software, had the remote-access application called pcAnywhere on some of the company's voting machines. Virginia Martin, the Columbia County Board of Elections Democratic Commissioner, told WGXC March 9 that her county does not use the ES&S machines, but many large counties in New York State do.
