A newly reorganized Cairo-Durham Board of Education voted Tues., July 1, to close the Cairo-Durham Elementary School located in Durham. The resolution passed on a vote of six to one. Robert Criswell abstained; Beth Daly was not present. The decision, effective Sept. 1, reverses the action taken by the board last month to keep the building open. The board vote clearly upset Durham Town Supervisor Bill Carr who stood and insulted board members for promising "to do their best" to facilitate the district's consolidation plan going forward. Carr's vulgar language got him ejected from the meeting by new board member Stephen Brandow. Audrey Matott reported in The Daily Mail Brandow, David Infantino and Robert MacGiffert were all sworn during the reorganization meeting that preceded the vote. The newly seated Infantino was then elected board president. Second-year member Peter Byrne was chosen vice president. A recording of the full board meeting is available at wgxc [dot] org [forward slash] archives. [Recorded by Galen Joseph-Hunter (47:58). Please note the explicit language in the recording at 42:02 and 45:44.]
