Max Oppen is reporting in the Register Star Columbia Memorial Hospital has announced plans to sell Kaaterskill Care to a private management corporation. According to a statement released by the hospital Tues., Dec. 2, ownership of the 120-bed facility in Jefferson Heights will be transferred to Premier Healthcare Management within the next 12 months. Premier is a for-profit company. CMH president Jay P. Cahalan called this a "transformative" time in healthcare, and said it has become clear a new operating model was needed for the nursing home. "Stand-alone facilities are less able to achieve the economies of scale necessary to operate in today's environment," Cahalan said. Premier already owns several nursing homes in New York state and the company has an excellent record of staff retention, a hospital spokesman said. Kaaterskill Care employs approximately 100 people. CMH will maintain ownership and operation of the attached Greene Medical Arts building. That facility currently houses diagnostic services and physician practices.
