Forest rangers assist with flat ice rescue in Hunter

Jan 29, 2020 3:15 pm
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reporting the details of an incident that occurred January 26, at North South Lake in Hunter when two men riding a snowmobile broke through the ice. Four of the department's forest rangers, along with the Tannersville Rescue Squad and Hunter Ambulance responded to the scene after a call was received from Greene County 911 at 11:08 a.m. The 49-year-old man from High Falls and the 61-year-old man from Washingtonville were towing two ice fishing sleds full of fishing gear from the South Lake spillway to a fishing spot on North Lake when the snowmobile went through the thinner ice. Both of the men went into the water, but managed to pull themselves out and crawl approximately 50 feet to shore. They were evaluated by Hunter Ambulance and refused further medical treatment before emergency personnel helped them out of the woods. The forest rangers then had to determine how to get the snowmobile and ice fishing equipment out of the lake. A local vehicle recovery service was hired by the fisherman to pull the snowmobile out of the water. Read the full press release at dec [dot] ny [ dot] gov.
