Patricia Doxsey is reporting for the Daily Freeman Ulster County officials are moving forward with plans to sell the land on which the former county jail is located. The county Legislature will hold a public hearing on the question of whether to have the parcel, located off Golden Hill Drive in the city of Kingston, declared surplus land and transfer it to a local development corporation for sale to a private developer. The hearing will be held August 11. In May, the county Legislature adopted a resolution directing Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan to inventory existing county-owned lands to determine whether they could be redeveloped as workforce and affordable housing. Since then, the county has received "site concepts" from at least five developers for "affordable, mixed-income" housing at the 15-acre Golden Hill site. Transferring the property to a local development corporation will allow the county some say in how the property is developed. Legislature Chairman David Donaldson said the as-yet-to-be established five-member local development corporation will include two members from the executive branch, two Legislature appointees and one individual from outside the county government. The county abandoned the Golden Hill jail building in 2007 when it opened the Ulster County Law Enforcement Center on Route 32. Ryan's office is expected to submit a resolution to the Legislature for consideration in August to transfer the property to the local development corporation. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
