Decision on Watts' hog farm postponed again

Jan 01, 2018 1:30 pm

Anthony Fiducia is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Cairo town officials have once against postponed a special town health board meeting to decide the fate of Jason Watts' hog farm, located on Mountain Avenue. This marks the third time the board has gathered to discuss the farm and decide if it will adopt an August letter from the state giving the operation a clean bill of health. Neither town board members Gary Warner Jr. or Douglas Ostrander attended the meeting, thereby preventing a quorum. Watts, a town board member-elect, has been embroiled in litigation over the farm with Ostrander, the outgoing board member. That case has now been withdrawn. Watts believes once he is sworn in, the vote will be split 2 and 2, if he recuses himself. Three votes are required to pass any resolution. If the vote ends in a stalemate, town supervisor Dan Benoit said the board will refer the matter back to the state Health Department. “I don’t know what the long-term remedy is,” he said. “It’s possible that this complaint sits in limbo for two years until there’s new members on the board and the vote changes.” Watts’ farm is scheduled to be discussed during the regular meeting of the town board, 7 p.m., Jan. 8 at Town Hall.
