Nick Reisman at New York State of Politics reports that Republican Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan is mad about Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order that would grant parolees the right to vote in New York, saying the measure is “exchanging votes at the expense of public safety.” Cuomo announced the executive order April 18 that would allow 35,000 people on to the voting rolls. “It’s ridiculous public policy,” Flanagan said. “He said, I’m tired of waiting. I’m going to do something like this on my own and the taxpayers should be absolutely outraged.... The way this should be done is we have hearings, we have committees, and a legitimate public policy discussion that the governor doesn’t want to engage in.” Flanagan said he might challenge the executive order in court, and said it seemed to be the result of the primary challenge from Cynthia Nixon in the Democratic primary for governor. “Yes, and I still think it’s bad public policy regardless.
