Veteran status to be shown on state ID

Oct 04, 2012 6:48 am
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed Wed., Oct. 3, legislation allowing the state Department of Motor Vehicles to place a distinguishing mark on state identification cards and drivers' licenses to indicate its holder is a veteran, according to a statement released by the Goveror's office. Under the law, any veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces may request the veteran status mark from the DMV. The rationale behind passage was to facilitate a simpler and convenient way for veterans to show and verify their status. Many local businesses throughout New York provide discounts to veterans. The law takes effect in one year. The review of documents supporting an honorable discharge from the armed forces will now become an additional task for DMV staff during the license renewal process.
