Background checks extended in New York

Sep 13, 2019 12:29 am
David Lombardo reports in the Albany Times Union that background checks for firearm purchases in New York can now take up to 30 days, as a new law took effect Sept. 12 in New York. Previously, after three days one could buy a gun even if a background check was inconclusive. Now, 27 additional days will be allowed. Officials say 90 percent of background checks are completed in just a few days. Backers of the measure say with a longer period for a background check would have stopped Dylann Roof, the perpetrator of a mass shooting at a church in Charleston, from buying a weapon. The president of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, Tom King, said the law is not necessary saying it as “feel-good legislation.” Read more about this story in the Albany Times Union.
