Paul Kirby reports in the Daily Freeman that the activist group Scenic Hudson announced Oct. 29 that it is buying more than 500 acres along the Hudson River in the city of Kingston and the town of Ulster. The environmental group will make a public park on land that was once set to be a housing development called Hudson Landing. Scenic Hudson Land Trust's Quarry Waters LLC bought the 508 acres from Hudson Landing developer AVR Acquisition Corp. of Yonkers. The land has assessed value of about $5.1 million, though the group did not reveal the sale price. “Securing this property will bring tremendous recreational, ecological, scientific and economic benefits to city and town residents and the entire region," Scenic Hudson President Ned Sullivan said in a statement. “... This acquisition represents Scenic Hudson’s most ambitious undertaking in its history to transform a former industrial site on the Hudson into a community asset in an urban setting.” The land includes a mile of Hudson River shoreline, and stretches between the town of Ulster and the city of Kingston.
