Feb 27, 2020 2:45 pm
Ariél Zangla is reporting for the Daily Freeman U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado said February 27, the country needs to make sure it has the necessary resources to protect the public's health in light of the coronavirus threat. The Rhinebeck Democrat also noted the Trump administration should make sure it does not undermine the nation's ability to tackle the issue. "I think it's important that we have the resources that we need to have a defense system and make sure that we're protecting public health," Delgado said. He said he found it "concerning" the president's proposed budget calls for significant cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as approximately $25 million from public health preparedness and response allocations. The 2019 global novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, has symptoms similar to the flu and first emerged in December in Wuhan, China. This week, the CDC warned the American public to prepare for a U.S. outbreak of the disease."We have to be aggressive in terms of making sure that we're communicating with China and other countries that are being impacted to make sure that we are requiring transparency and accountability across the country and across the globe," Delgado said, "and to make sure that we are incredibly forthcoming when it comes to the impacts that are on the ground."
