Legislative session to be extended through Friday

Josefa Velasquez and Jimmy Vielkind are reporting at Capital New York the state legislative session is likely to be extended through Fri., Jun. 19. Emerging from a closed-door meeting with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said Tue., Jun. 16, his members were prepared to stay beyond Wed., Jun. 17, the scheduled end of session. Lawmakers must come to an agreement on the rent-regulation laws, which expired Monday at midnight. The Legislature also has not come to a consensus on mayoral control of New York City public schools, which expires at the end of the month. Lawmakers have come to agreement on a number of other issues this week, including the allocation of $10 million to combat rape on college campuses, legislation for more stringent nail salon practices and a measure that would allow New Yorkers to bring their dogs to outdoor dining establishments.
