Rensselaer County Republicans to turn over voter registration info to ICE

Jul 19, 2019 12:14 am
Mallory Moench and Kenneth C. Crowe II report for the Albany Times Union that Rensselaer County Republicans said July 18 that they planned to have the county Board of Elections share voter registration information with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. County Democrats said the announcement was "political grandstanding" and said the Republicans had not told them about the issue. "We are serious about following federal immigration laws in Rensselaer County and are happy to be of any assistance that we can provide federal authorities," said County Legislature Chairperson Mike Stammel. Republican Elections Commissioner Jason Schofield said he "will fully cooperate with ICE on this important matter." Democrats disagreed. "This exposes all citizens of Rensselaer County to federal investigation," said County Legislature Minority Leader Peter Grimm. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill last month to allow undocumented immigrants to apply for driver licenses. Rensselaer County officials claimed they would file a lawsuit against the state over that issue, but have not started any litigation. Read more about this story in the Albany Times Union.
