Kate Lisa is reporting for Johnson Newspaper Corp. priests from Stottville and Ravena are among the newly identified defendants in child sexual abuse complaints filed against the Albany Catholic Diocese June 15, under the state’s Child Victims Act. Father Andrew J. Lenahan is accused of sexually abusing a minor for three years beginning in 1960 at Holy Family in Stottville, and Father Bernard Turner is accused of sexually abusing a minor from 1981 to 1982 at St. Patrick Ravena. The 52 cases had been stuck in limbo while state and local courts were closed through the COVID-19 lockdown, according to the law firms of Jeff Anderson and Associates of New York City, and LaFave Wein and Frament, of Guilderland. Eleven priests and seven nuns were among those name in the 52 complaints publicly identified for the first time, Monday. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the Child Victims Act in February 2019 to allow survivors of childhood sexual abuse to seek justice and file a case with expired statute of limitations, but for one year only. Last month, state lawmakers extended the act's look-back window an additional year. However, attorneys are encouraging survivors to take action before the original Child Victims Act deadline of August 13, to take full advantage of their rights under the law.
