American Valve housing plan dropped

Mar 27, 2015 10:24 am
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting in The Daily Mail the plan to construct a housing development on the site of the former American Valve plant in Coxsackie is no longer under consideration. Greene County Industrial Development Agency Executive Director Rene Van Schaack said the plan is not viable because of the sewer moratorium imposed on the village by the state several years ago. Van Schaack said that ban prohibits new hookups to the sewer system, thereby making any significant housing development impossible. A spokesman for Concerned Citizens for Coxsackie, a group opposed to the project, said they were pleased with the recent turn of events. Brian Wallace said, "We are very happy that they agreed it was not a good idea to put housing on that site, whether multi-family or single-family housing." Coxsackie officials are now exploring the possibility of the village taking over the site, entertaining the possibility of designating it "forever wild" or creating recreational space.
