Statewide mask rule goes into effect

Apr 17, 2020 1:45 pm
Kevin Tampone is reporting for Syracuse [dot] com as of 8 p.m., Fri., Apr. 17, all New Yorkers must wear face masks in public. Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued the order April 15. The rule is meant to help further slow the spread of coronavirus statewide. The new rule does not apply to children under the age of 2, nor does it apply to anyone unable to medically tolerate a face covering. As of Friday night, anyone not exempt from the rule must cover their noses and mouths with a mask or cloth face covering when in a public space where they cannot stay six feet away from others. Cuomo said the order applies in situations like public transportation and streets crowded with other people. He even said people out walking or running in their neighborhoods should wear a mask around their neck and raise it if they pass others. The mask rule applies in grocery stores and at other retailers, as well. The mask does not need to be anything medical. Any type of cloth covering, including a homemade mask or bandana, would be fine, Cuomo said. There are currently no fines or other penalties associated with the order. Local police agencies are charged with enforcing the rule. Read the full story at Syracuse [dot] com.
