Kenneth C. Crowe II reports in the Times Union that opponents of the S.A. Dunn Landfill in Rensselaer have some new allies in the county and neighboring East Greenbush. The Dunn landfill used to be a gravel mine and is now the largest construction debris landfill in New York state, and located next to the Rensselaer City School District campus. Complaints about odors, dust, litter, and other problems have grown so common in East Greenbush that the town held a special public hearing March 11 to consider a resolution asking the state to revoke the permit required to operate the landfill. “When it comes to the Dunn Landfill we have no jurisdiction. We don’t get revenues. We do get problems,” East Greenbush Supervisor Jack Conway said. Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin sent a letter to the meeting. “These issues, air quality, dust, trash mitigation, traffic and noise among others raise questions as to whether the landfill is in compliance with state laws and should be closely examined by those in the state with jurisdiction. If it is found the landfill is substantially not in compliance, then closure must be considered,” McLaughlin wrote. Activists want the landill closed now, and the dump’s state permit expires in 2022.
