Legislators head back to Albany
Jan 06, 2020 12:58 am
Cayla Harris reports in the Times Union that legislators head back to Albany this week facing a $6.1 billion deficit. Democrats control both chambers of the legislature, with many Senate Republicans announcing they will not run for reelection this year. A spokesperson for Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the response to the budget deficit is "all just speculation" since the governor has not said yet if he will raise taxes or cut spending to solve the budget problem. Marijuana legalization, criminal justice reform, and the safety of limousines and children in day care are other topics on legislative agendas this winter. Democrats are “continuing to push our families-first agenda to help end the cycle of poverty for New Yorkers,” Assembly leader Carl Heastie said. Cuomo gives his "State of the State" address Wednesday in Albany. Read more about this story in the Times Union.
