SUNY Albany sued for Title IX failure

Oct 03, 2017 2:34 pm
Laura Wagner reports in Deadspin that the State University of New York at Albany is being sued for violating Title IX regulations when it abruptly eliminated the women’s tennis program in March. Isidora Pejovic from Serbia, Chae Bean Kang from South Korea, Alba Sala Huerta from Spain, and Chassidy King, a U.S. citizen, are suing in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. The suit also alleges age discrimination against the team’s coach, Gordon Graham, who was fired after women's tennis was eliminated. Graham earlier filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. They investigated and found that SUNY Albany, “failed to establish that it has effectively accommodated the athletic interests and abilities of women,” according to a letter sent to Graham. The Office of Civil Rights also denounced a “toothless” resolution agreement with the university that did not include sanctions nor reinstatement of the women’s tennis team. A SUNY Albany spokesperson had no comment. Read the full story in Deadspin.
